LJ Fic Guide for Beginners (The Illustrated Edition)
aka How To Post Fic on LiveJournal

1. Write your fic.

2. Get it beta-ed. (Now why on earth should I do that?)

Harsh but true: some people won't read an un-betaed fic. Why? They think it'll be full of mistakes. So get it betaed, and get more readers!

3. Post it on LJ.

This is where it gets interesting. Aaaand where we start our new list. Ready? Still with me? AWESOME.

Stage One: Getting Fic From Word to LiveJournal

1. Have your fic document open in Word (or equivalent)

2. Make sure any words that are italicised, bolded or underlined have the necessary HTML markers around them. (Not sure what I'm talking about? Click here.)

3. Go to the 'Post an Entry page', at http://www.livejournal.com/update.bml.

4. Select the community you wish to post your fic to from the drop-down menu next to your icon.
+ You must be a member of this community. (But how do I join?)
+ What community you post the fic to will differ according to fandom.
e.g. Do not post Supernatural fic to a Harry Potter community, unless it's a crossover fic.

5. Click the HTML button. If it is selected, it will look like the picture below. RichText can be confusing and difficult to work with. I strongly suggest you avoid it.

6. Copy and paste your fic into the text box. I strongly suggest you space out your paragraphs and dialogue. This makes your fic easier to read. Let me show you what I mean.

Stage Two: Adding Important Extras

7. Add a header above the fic. (Why use a header? How do I add one?)

8. Add an LJ-cut. (What is that? Why and how do I add one?)

9. Press post and wait for comments!

(This didn't answer my question!)

Excellent primer! I've been posting to LJ for ever, but I've friends who stay away from the site because they just can't get the hang of posting here ~ I'm going to rec this to them immediately!

I totally agree; avoid Rich Text at all costs! ;)

Thank you! It's great to know it's easy to understand, really good. (And yes, RichText is the devil, I swear.)

Thank you for the post. I need to explain the mechanics of posting fics to a friend and this should help. The only little glitch is that when I clicked on the explanation links for headers and the LJ cut, which are the parts I need most, they seem to point to your journal that must be friends-locked, as I get a line back saying "you are not authorised to view this entry". Is there any chance you might post them in this same comm and/or update the links?

Thank you very much! I originally put this together in my journal and had forgotten to change those links over. What a klutz! They should all work just fine now.

They work now - thanks again for posting these tips!

This is an excellent resource, thanks so much for putting it together. Would it be ok if I linked it from my own LJ, or from an LJ comm?

Absolutely! Link away, wherever you like.

Thank you
This was EXTREMELY helpful! I wish I had seen this before I submitted the Secret Santa fanfic. The only things I did on the list was write it in WORD and have it betaed x2.

Thanks really for your help!

I comment whenever I appreciate a post on a blog or I have something to contribute to
the conversation. Usually it is triggered by the sincerness displayed
in the post I browsed. And after this post volkslieder: LJ Fic
Guide for Beginners (The Illustrated Edition). I was actually moved
enough to drop a leave a responsea response ;-) I actually
do have 2 questions for you if you don't mind.

Could it be simply me or do some of these responses come across as if they
are left by brain dead visitors? :-P And, if you are writing on other sites, I would like to follow anything new you
have to post. Would you list all of all your shared pages like your
linkedin profile, Facebook page or twitter feed?

I'm not writing anywhere else, I'm afraid! I'm not even really using LJ much these days. But I'm glad you enjoyed this - even if I'm not quite sure which "brain dead" responses you are referring to?! I didn't think any of the comments came across like that... :)

Thank you very much! I haven't written on LJ in a long time so this helps a ton.
